A Portrait of Jacklyn is a realistic drawing using pan pastel and pastel pencil to establish depth of shadow, subtle turning of form, and detail. The balance of opposing elements is dominant in this drawing, shown by the hair, lighting, and figure/background. The large dark planes of hair are contrasted with the fine detail of wisps of hair or shadows of single strands. The opposing forces of strong light and shadow also stand out. Also, a realistic figure contrasted by a nonobjective background exhibits the idea of opposing elements that ultimately work together in harmony. The process of this drawing was both additive and subtractive. Many layers were gradually rubbed into the Arches Cover paper to create a velvety appearance of the darks, while the lights were created by erasing or applying white pastel pencil.
