A Means for Heat is an exploration of self as a member of post industrialist society and a lover of the natural world that is compromised by overconsumption. The piece hangs precariously balanced, explosions of color, disparities in rendering, contradicting imagery and text threaten a collapse of unity. This fragility alludes to the uncertainty felt by young people amidst the pandemic and ongoing environmental degradation. Influenced by dadaist collage, paintings of the Russian symbolists, and naturalist writers like John Stienbeck and George Santayana, this piece was a stream of consciousness over the course of 3 months in the winter of 2020.
