Shadow Side of Winter

Shadow Side of Winter, Plein Air Work ONLY
Shadow Side of Winter
Entirely done "en plein air"...on my hands and knees...it is 36x36" and it was painted entirely on the ground. But well worth the extra effort. I create all my "mural" size plein air creation on 24" width panels, by varying lengths: 18", 24", 36" and 48". Thus even a 10 feet high mural can be easily shipped and hung at it's new home!

This creation was done in the late spring at Priest Lake, one of North Idaho's beautiful lakes. I captured other views of this same mountain, but emphasized the small rock formation called "Chimney Rock", as you can see in the shadow side of the mountain.

These murals are painted on canvases stretched on 2" bars, and making the mural a tad more contemporary with the 1" black space between each panel, to add a different dimension to the entire creation. I've been doing these since about the mid 1990s. And with all my plein air landscapes, I play down all the detail (such as the water or huge forested areas, and put my detail and strongest light affects where I want the viewer's eyes to travel to! Thus the snow caps!
